July 2023

Message from the President

I would like to thank everyone who made a block for Corrine’s quilt, everyone did a GREAT job.  A special thank you to Barbara Hanaburgh, Carol Killian, and Susan Parry for all your help assembling the top.
I hope you will be able to join us at the next guild meeting, on Wed. July 12th at 7:00 pm.  Be sure to bring your show and tell and sewing supplies for our project.

I saw this Hexagon star, coaster, or table mat and thought it might be a nice “quick” summer project. Remember we need ideas for a raffle quilt.  If you have any questions or ideas, please feel free to call
me or email me.

Kate

** Minutes from the June Meeting **

The June Meeting consisted of a fine yet chilly picnic, the vote for the slate of officers, and the presentation to outgoing President Corinne Tetz of the thank you signature quilt. Members contributed a signature block in appreciation of President Corinne. Quilt Picture below.

Program Committee

For July, we have a fun project that can be done by machine or by hand. You can make one star or 7 to join together into a pretty small mat. You can even go larger, once you understand the technique. Any color palette will work for this project.

HEXAGON STAR

To make 1 star- coaster
Bring 1- 7 1/2” background square (beige or another color)
1- 6” star fabric (blue or another color)
1- 6” cotton batting * we will be provided.
Freezer paper* we will be provided.
Marking pencil or pen
Thread to match the background fabric.
Paper scissors
Fabric scissors
Sewing needles
Straight pins
Small Ruler (to add seam allowance)
This can be sewn by hand or machine.
If you plan to sew by machine, we will pin or baste, and then take home to sew.
This can be a coaster, table mat, or even a quilt. If you have any questions call Kate.

Reminder: we need a new committee chair for the program committee. This is a very important committee and a fun one to be on. Please consider putting your name forward. Remember, this is a working committee so each member will be pitching in—the chair does not do all the work alone. If interested, let the new President know.

Continuing Business

Still on the agenda: A committee chair is needed for the Raffle Quilt Committee. Whether we have a show or not, a raffle quilt is needed. The raffle quilt is a critical way we raise funds for our continuing education fund and other guild support.
Quilt show—yea or nay! If yea, we need a show committee chair. If nay, we need to brainstorm and plan an alternative event. Decision time is short as in the past, the show committee would begin meeting in August.

Tips

Keep a clean iron: sometimes the sole of your iron can get sticky or burned. To remedy the situation, grab a dryer sheet and iron over it, then crumple it up while your iron is still warm –watch your fingers—and wipe the tough spots. You will be surprised at how well it works.

If you use spray adhesive to baste your quilt and hate the smell, and don’t like doing the whole process outside, you can spray the back of the backing outdoors and carefully carry it inside to your work area and top it with batting. Then step back outdoors to spray the back of the quilt top, carefully bring it back indoors to complete the sandwich and smoothing process.
Anytime you use glue, be sure that it is washable. If you use Elmer’s School Glue, you won’t have to worry about accidental spills since it always washes out.
For sticky needles from fusible buildup, you can buy non-stick sewing machine needles or simply wipe the needle occasionally with some alcohol, acetone, or sewing machine oil on a cotton ball.
